Conflict Resolution

Project AbstractCharles Garvin

The specific purposes of this project are as follows:

  1. To develop a database encompassing information on the etiology and extent of youth group conflict and the nature of programs developed to ameliorate such conflicts. These programs may exist under the auspices of many institutions such as schools, welfare agencies, youth movements, youth work training programs, and community service centers.
  2. To develop a set of collaboratories to identify sources of data as well as to join to plan for and carry out the collection of new data.
  3. To identify the types of programs that exist in each country for ameliorating conflicts among youth groups as well as identifying unmet needs with respect to such programs.
  4. To select exemplary programs in a variety of societies throughout the world for study; to collect data with respect to such programs, and to analyze these data for comparative purposes.
  5. To disseminate the findings with respect to exemplary programs to educational and welfare agencies so they may be adapted to local conditions and replicated when appropriate.

The ultimate outcomes of the project are the following:

  1. Data on the nature and extent of youth group conflicts in major regions of the world will be available to practitioners and scholars.
  2. Data on model programs for the reduction of youth group conflict and the outcomes of such programs will be made available to funders, policy makers, administrators, and practitioners.
  3. The findings of the project will be used to advocate with policy makers for the development of new programs to ameliorate youth group conflicts.
  4. Based on the findings from this project, new projects will be devised to collect additional data that may be required for future policy and practice development; future data may also be obtained from societies and cultures not included in this first project.
